“Arrrugg!!” She screamed falling off the stair case.
“Say me hi to your ancestors.” I smirks evily.
FLORA
I sprang out of bed at the sound of Ms. Rita's voice, rushing out to find Ms. Prudent standing on the staircase with her arms folded.
“What have you done to her?” I demanded, my voice shaking with anger.
“Dare you, raise your ugly voice at me?” she yelled back, her eyes blazing with defiance.
“I’ll make sure to tell the Don about this,” I threatened, hurrying down the stairs to check on Ms. Rita.
That’s when I saw her, lying face down on the floor in a pool of blood.
“Look what you’ve done to her!” I cried out, but Prudent was already gone.
I raced to the Don’s room, pounding on the door. “Boss, please hurry! Ms. Rita is in danger!”
KINGSTON’S POV
I heard a knock on my door, thinking it was Rita at first.
But then I heard Flora’s voice, and my heart sank. I leapt out of bed, rushing to open the door, only to find it locked from the outside.
I quickly grabbed my landline and called Jeff from the staff quarters, telling him to hurry to the main mansion. I then broke down the door and rushed downstairs, where I found Flora crouched beside BRITTANY, who was lying in a pool of blood.
“What happened?” I asked, lifting her up from the floor. Praying silently for her safety.
“Sir, it was Ms. Prudent! She pushed her down the stairs,” Flora cried.
I turned to Jeff and growled, “Lock prudent up in her room until I get back from the hospital. If anything happens to Brittany and my child, she’ll have her head on a platter.”
With that, I rushed to the car, Flora following close behind.
I sped to the hospital, my heart racing with fear, praying to any higher power that would listen to keep Rita safe.
I knew I hadn’t been the most devout person in recent years, but I hoped God would have mercy on me this one time.
We arrived at the hospital, and I pulled up to the emergency entrance, horns blaring.
A team of nurses rushed out to meet us, stretcher at the ready.
I gently lifted Rita out of the car, and they whisked her away to the emergency room.
I tried to follow, but Dr. Alex barred my way.
“Sorry, Kings, you’ve done your part. Let us take it from here.” He patted my shoulder, his expression sympathetic.
I took a deep breath, nodded, and reluctantly sat down on the waiting bench beside Flora, both of us anxiously awaiting news of Rita’s condition.
As the seconds ticked by, turning into minutes, and the minutes into hours, I paced back and forth in the waiting room, my anxiety growing with each passing moment.
The operation had been going on for nearly three hours, and I was starting to lose hope.
But then, the door to the emergency room swung open, and Dr. Alex emerged, his expression solemn.
I rushed towards him, my heart racing. “How is she?” I demanded, my voice shaking with fear.
“Calm down, Kings,” Dr. Alex said, his voice soothing. “Rita is stable now, but…there’s something you need to know.”
My heart sank, anticipating the worst. “What is it?” I pressed, my mind racing with terrible scenarios.
Dr. Alex hesitated before delivering the blow. “She was pregnant with twins, Kings. But due to the accident, she lost one of the fetuses. The other one, however, is still intact, and she’s still pregnant with a single baby.”
I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. Twins? Rita was pregnant with twins? My mind reeled with the news, a mix of emotions swirling inside me.
I was happy that Rita was still pregnant, but devastated that she had lost one of our babies. And Prudent…I would never forgive her for causing us so much pain.
“We need to keep an eye on her from now henceforth, since one of the fetus is gone any little mistakes the other fetus too will be gone.. or she might as well fell into premature labor.” He explained further.
“We need to keep a close eye on her from now on,” Dr. Alex emphasized. “With one fetus gone, any minor complication could put the remaining fetus at risk, or worse, lead to premature labor.”
I nodded fervently, my gratitude overflowing. “Thanks so much, Doctor. Thanks for answering my calls, even at odd hours. I owe you one.”
Dr. Alex chuckled, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “Did you just say thank you, Kingston? Or am I dreaming?” He pinched himself, as if to confirm he wasn’t hallucinating. I couldn’t blame him; I wasn’t exactly known for my expressions of gratitude.
Just then, the nurses wheeled Rita out on a stretcher, her fragile form still and pale. My heart skipped a beat as I rushed to her side, my eyes fixed on her face, willing her to be okay.
“I’m here, Rita. I’m here,” I whispered, taking her hand in mine. “You’re going to be okay. We’re going to get through this together.”
Her eyes flickered open, and she gazed up at me with a weak smile. “Kingston…I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“Sorry for what, my love?” I asked, my heart aching with emotion. “You’ve done nothing wrong. This isn’t your fault.”
But she just closed her eyes, her body relaxing into the stretcher. I looked up at Dr. Alex, my eyes questioning.
“She needs rest, Kingston,” he explained. “We’ll need to monitor her closely for the next few days to ensure the remaining fetus is stable.”
I nodded, my mind racing with thoughts and fears. But one thing was certain – I wouldn’t leave Rita’s side until she was out of danger. I would do whatever it took to ensure her safety and the safety of our unborn child.
“I’ll be here, Doc,” I said, my eyes never leaving Rita’s face. “I won’t leave her side.”
Dr. Alex nodded and patted my shoulder. “I know you won’t, Kingston. We’ll do everything we can to ensure Rita and the baby’s safety.”
As the medical team wheeled Rita away to her hospital room, I followed closely behind, my heart heavy with worry. I couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt and responsibility for what had happened. If only I had been more careful, more protective…
But I pushed those thoughts aside and focused on being there for Rita. I held her hand, talked to her, and encouraged her to rest. And when she finally drifted off to sleep, I sat beside her, watching over her, determined to be the rock she needed.
Days passed, and Rita’s condition stabilized. The baby was still fragile, but the doctors were optimistic. And as Rita grew stronger, our bond grew stronger too. We talked, laughed, and cherished every moment together.
And I knew, in that hospital room, that I would never let her go again.
