PREVIOUSLY ON SEXCAPADES:
β¦we arrived in Onitsha the following morning. The journey was very successful. On touching down Onitsha, we boarded a bus straight to the village.
The meeting was far beyond the peace talk we had anticipated.
It was full of agony, pain and tearsβ¦
THE CONTINUATION:
The scene of the meeting was in our compound in the village, under the giant mango tree.
I sat with my wife on a bench. Adjacent to me from the right was Susan who sat on a plastic chair while to my left adjacent sat my mother on a plastic chair. Amadi sat in front of us all. At the center stood a table and on it was a stainless tray pan housing kola nuts, garden-egg and βokwa oji (groundnut paste) while beside the tray were bottles of beer drinks, malt, gin and wine.
As the custom demanded, I presented the tray of kola to Amadi. He received the kola with thanks and returned the tray to me to bless. βOji Eze anaghachi na Ezena akaβ(the kola nut has journeyed back to him who brought it)β, he muttered.
I stood up, took the tray of kola nuts back to Amadi βWith the power bestowed on me as the βisi Obiβ(head of the family), Ichie Amadi, I give you the go ahead power to break the kolanut,β I said and handed the tray to him.
Amadi cleared his throat and began the prayer with a kola nut in his hand. After blessing it, he broke it and removed the four tiny βeyesβ of the kola nut, each from each of the four lobes. He muttered some incantations, then threw all the four βeyesβ of the kola nut to the ground to open the eyes and ears of our ancestors. After some prayers, Amadi then threw the entire four lobes to the ground, inviting the ancestors to come and eat and answer the prayers being offered to them. The major prayer point was peace and unity. He broke another kola nut, took one lobe and signaled I should come and share the remaining.
I did the sharing. I took it to my mother first. She took a garden egg, deep into the groundnut paste before eating. I drived the tray of the kola nut towards Susan but she politely declined it.
βNo. Thank you..β, she said.
βNo, you have to partake,β Amadi interrupted.
βItβs a feast communion to share peace and love. Itβs life. Feast with us,β he said to Susan.βGo back, let her take whichever one she wants to eatβ, he instructed me.
I did just as Amadi instructed.
Susan reluctantly took a garden egg to eat.
My wife was the last person I presented the tray to take hers before taking mine too. It was the kola nut I took. I ate it with alligator pepper.
We all ate. Then watered the kola down with drinks. Because there were varieties of drinks to choose from.
Then, the meeting started off properly.
Amadi cleared his throat before beginning to speak: β..i really appreciate you all for honoring my invitation,β he paused. βAlready, I believed, we all know why we are here today. I am not going to talk too much. Because I have done the talking already with each and everyone of you, mostly, on the phone,β he sighed before continuing. βAn elder doesnβt sit at home and watch a tattered goat deliver. I must be sincere with you all, what is happening in my late brotherβs household is not a thing of joy to me. Mind you, I didnβt call this meeting for judgment nor did I call this meeting for condemnation. But for peace. I want peace and unity in my late brotherβs household. The atrocity has been made. And those who committed the atrocity have realized the gravity of their mistake and all they are asking for is nothing but forgiveness and the way forward. We have to forgive them. Because to err is human, to forgive is divine..β
βMy husband, how could they do this? Itβs a sacrilege. This single act of theirs contributed to what killed my son, Jude. Tell me, how do I forgive them? With which heart will the forgiveness come from?β, my mother cried out in tears. Then started cleaning her eyes with her wrapper.
Amidst my mother cleaning her tears with her wrapper, I leaned forward and went down on my knees before her. My wife joined me.
βMama, I have hurted you so much. I know that I am not worthy to be called your son again. But I am on my knees to ask for your mercy and forgiveness. What happened was a great mistake but I am promising you that such ugly thing will not happen again. Please mother, find a place in your heart to forgive me. I promise to right my wrongs..β, I pleaded amid my own tears.
βMama, if there is no sin there will be no forgiveness. I know they have sinned against God and humanity. But please forgive us all. Accept us back and letβs live like one big family..,β my wife added.
Meanwhile before I could know what was going on, Susan was already kneeling beside my wife, sobbing in regret.
βMama, I am very sorry because I have wronged you badly. Please forgive us all. Itβs all my fault. Though I did what I have to do to protect and keep the lineage of your son, Jude, my late husband..β
βTo protect him or to kill him?β, my mother interrupted.
βMama, to protect his lineage. My husband was impotent. He couldn’t get a woman pregnant because of his medical impairment..β
βMy son impotent?β, my mother asked in great surprise and disbelief.
βYes mama. And in order for his lineage not to be lost, I have to do what I did. If I tell you that I didnβt regret my actions, then I am a big liar. I am sorry Mama. Please find a place in your heart to forgive me, please..β Susan was pleading when Amadi interrupted.
βMy wife, the deed has been done. And we cannot kill or send them to exile. Instead, we have to forgive them. Because when an elder beats a child with the right hand, they use the left hand to console the child,β he paused. βMy wife, please forgive them. Let peace rain. Peace fosters unity and togetherness among family members. Peace is a sign of understanding, tolerance, selflessness, patience and forgiveness within the family. The importance of peace cannot be overemphasized in any family. Peace is a valuable treasure..β Amadi added.
