What could be the problem that prompted the emergency call? Let it not be that the old man has dropped dead. Because if that was the case, I doubt if he would forgive me. Worst still, his spirit, I believed, would hunt me.
The message came very late. So our trip would be the following day. Thank goodness my brother was around. I have spoken with him on the phone. Even him, he doesnβt know the purpose of the call.
Jude had booked our flight to Asaba already. By the special grace of God, we would definitely be in Onitsha or village tomorrow, as the case may be, to hear the unknown.
Meanwhile as all these drama of blood of a thing were happening, I never let my wife know. Even when I traveled to the village to question my parents pertaining to my paternity, I didnβt let her know the purpose of my journey. I only told her I was going to see my parents. That I was summoned by them. Even when I came back, I had to lie to her that it was because of her that I was summoned. That my parents want her divorce. I went further telling her that I had a fight with them before coming back.
The reason I hid the truth from my wife was because if I told her, I would end up exposing myself. Thank goodness she was not on good terms with my parents and she could never know what was on ground except if I told her.
We left Lagos for home the following day. As expected, I journeyed with my brother. The journey was full of sober reflection. So many things raced through my head. Many questions were begging for answers. But I couldnβt find any answers to them.
We landed in Asaba safe and sound. From Asaba, we boarded a taxi to our house in Onitsha.
Moments later, we got home.
The old man has been discharged from the hospital already. He was getting better. He was even the person that sent for us to come home. Although it was our mother that did the calling.
On seeing him, I heaved a heavy sigh to relieve myself from the burden of guilt. Thank God he wasnβt dead. Because if anything had happened to him, I would have lived with a guilty conscience for the rest of my life.
Our mother was aware of our coming. So he had prepared something for us. I pretended as if nothing had happened. I donβt want my brother to know the battle I have been into with our parents. Even my parents maintained the same pretense level.
We all ate together as a family. It was after the dinner that our father started delivering his message to us. We all sat in the sitting room.
βMy children, you all are highly welcomedβ.
βThank you papaβ, we said in unison.
βI am very sorry for the urgency of my call,β he apologized.
βWe hope all is well?β, Jude asked.
βMy children, all is wellβ, he sighed. βBut the toad does not run in the daytime for nothing. Either it is after something, or something is after it,β he said while catching his breath.
βPapa, whatβs the problem?β, Jude asked.
βThere is no problem,β he paused. βAn old woman is always uneasy when dry bones are mentioned in a proverb. The day has come for you all to know the truth.β
βPapa, what truth are you talking about?β, Jude asked again.
βJude, slowly, slowly, the hot soup is licked.β
βNo problem father. But you speak in proverbs too muchβ, Jude replied.
βMy son, do not be in a hurry. Atleast, we all have the whole of today to spend together. If possible, the whole of tomorrow, too. But only if we are alive to see tomorrow. Although, we will live to see tomorrow. Thatβs our prayer.β
βOkay, papaβ, Jude said.
βJude, I had you in my youthful age. I was twenty five years of age when I gave birth to you. Today, I am eighty five years of age,β he paused. βJude, if I am mistaken, you should be sixty years old by now, ehn?β, he asked Jude.
βYou are very much correct, papaβ, Jude replied.
βIt was about twenty years later that Steven came into the family. That time, Jude, you were already with my brother, Cletus, in Lagosβ, he paused. βJude, we called you that your mother has given birth, eh?β,he asked.
βYesβ, Jude nodded.
βJude, after your birth, pregnancy ceased for your mother. But as my chi(creator) may have it, Steven came. As a matter of fact, he arrived in the family when all hope for a child was totally lost. Steven came and wiped off our tearsβ, he paused before continuing βJude, Steven, the two of you are a blessing to this family. In fact, in my next life, I will pray to have you two again as children. No matter what happens today or tomorrow, I want you two to take each other as brothers. Jude, in case I am no more tomorrow, take good care of your brother. Never forsake him. Finally, hold the family together..β
βPapa Jude, are you leaving us?β,my mother interrupted.
βIf I die today, did I die late?β, the old man asked.
βGod forbid!,β my mother said.
βPapa, you are not dying yetβ,Jude added while I patiently waited for him to speak.
βI am not dying yet. But death is a debt that we all shall pay for. Besides, nobody knows when he or she will die. Our prayer is that we may not die prematurelyβ, he paused. βIf I die today, I will die as a fulfilled man. My soul will definitely rest in perfect peace..β
βPapa Jude, stop wishing upon yourself death,β my mother interrupted again.
βWoman, I am not wishing myself death. I am only preparing myself for the inevitable. Death is inevitable. Besides, I am already closer to my grave,β he paused. βJude, two years after your birth, your mother took in again. But she ended up having a miscarriage. The circumstances behind her miscarriage severely affected her womb negatively. The doctor said that she had some complication, as such, she would not be able to conceive again. We thought it was a joke but after all was done, the ill fate still remained a reality. At some point, we gave up hope. We accepted our fate in good condition. Although it was not an easy one,β he sighed. βI love this woman so much. I am talking of your mother who is sitting right beside me. I ignored many advice of getting a second wife to stick with her. Because our marriage is for better and for worse..β
βAnd you people togetherness and hope was what triggered God to prove men wrong with the birth of Steven, ehn?β, Jude interrupted the old man.
βYou are right, my sonβ, my mother added.
βBehold, Steven came as a miracle child. Although, your mother did not carry him for nine months in her womb but she gave birth to him. I also father him. If, in my next life, I am given the opportunity, I will have Steven as a son again…β
βHold onβ, I interrupted. βWhat exactly do you mean that my mother didnβt carry me in her womb but birthed me?β,I had to ask amid confusion.
βMy son, I picked you up from the dump site as a new born baby. That fateful day, as I went to dispose of some trashs, I saw you lying naked, crying helplessly on a heap of dump. I took you home. And with the help of God and the support of my husband here, we nurtured you up. You survived, against odds. You are indeed a miracle child,β my mother spilled.
Silence prevailed.
I was speechless. Dumbfounded. Every now and then, what my mother said kept sounding like a gong in my head. It was a very difficult reality to accept.
Moments later, my father broke the silence: βI never knew that a day like this would come. Because I wanted to go into my grave with the secret. But when the revealing spirit came knocking, I had no option than to let the cat out from the bag,β he sighed. βThe two of you will remain my children forever. Like I said before, in my next life, I will still pray to my chi(creator) to have you two again. Please, I donβt want this to come between you two..β
I shedded tears amid the whole drama. In fact, had I known, I would have let them die with the secret. Because it was not an easy reality to accept.
After all said and done, I thanked my parents for everything. I promised them to remain their son. My brother, amid tears, also vowed to always be my brother. He promised my parents that he would continue to support and always have my back.
The revelation day was on a Saturday. We spent the night at home with them. On a Sunday, our father, for the first time, requested we take them on an outing.
We granted him his wish. We had a good family outing that Sunday evening. In fact, it was a memorable day to behold.
On the following Monday, we flew back to Lagos.
Meanwhile my parents asked me to come with my wife, Lucy. Although they didnβt tell me their reason for the invitation.
The following weekend, I went home with my wife. After all said and done, we ended up mending fences with my parents.
Finally, we got my parentβs blessings on our marriage.
We returned back to Lagos the following day being Sunday very much fulfilled.
But fews days later, we got the news that our father had passed away. The old man had a peaceful death β he went to bed but couldnβt wake up again.
Do you think that Stevenβs childless issue has now been solved having finally received their parentsβ blessings?
While, find out on the next episode.
