I know very well that my problem was not my parents but Susan. She was the biggest obstacle that I have to surmount if I have to make Lucy my wife.
Many have advised me to go ahead with the marriage without my parents blessings but deep down me, I needed my parents blessings in my marriage. Itβs very important.
So I decided to give it time. We started praying for a miracle of change. I had to also Involve other people to talk to my parents. These people were my uncles and my fatherβs friends.
While I waited for a positive outcome, I didn’t relent; I had to approach Susan to mend fences with her, to plead with her, to talk to her and make her understand that I needed to move ahead with my life.
I called her and informed her of my coming. That we need to talk. We had an appointment on a Sunday.
That Sunday I went to the house. My brother traveled to the East to have another word with my parents and my uncles.
βWhat will I offer you?β, Susan asked.
βI am okay. Thank youβ, I replied.
βOkayβ, she replied.
βHow is babies?β,I asked
βYour babies are doing wellβ, she replied.
βYou mean my nephews?β, I asked.
She smiled and shook her head.
βBut wait o, this one you are behaving well today, is like you are back to your senses?β, she asked.
βSusan, I am not here for trouble. I want us to talk and iron things outβ, I said.
βFinally, somebody has come back to his senses. So I am hearing youβ, she said.
βSusan, please let me move on with my life. You are married. You have your family. So Please allow me to marry too and start my own family,β I pleaded.
βSteve, you are asking for something impossible from me. You are mine and if I donβt have you, no one else will have you, not even Lucy,β she said with every seriousness.
βSusan what exactly do you want from me? To remain a sxxx toy to you forever or what?β, I had to ask.
βI want you all to myself, Steve..β
βWant me as in how? You are married to my brother for Godβs sake na. You should learn to live with himβ, I had to interrupt.
βYou are the only man in whom I am well pleased with. I want us together. I am ready to abscond with you to a place where nobody will find us,β she said.
βThat’s impossible. I canβt do that to my brother. The ground will definitely come after me. We have done enough against him already,β I said.
βAll I want is my happiness. All I want is for my children to grow up with their father. I want them to know who their real father is. I donβt want them to live with the false impression that Jude is their fatherβ, she said.
βSusan, no marriage is perfect. Please learn to live with your husband. Allow me to have my own life,β I advised.
We talked at length. But all my pleadings were not fruitful. Susan was hell-bent on her stand β that If she doesnβt have me, no one else would have me. In fact, I even went down on my knees begging this woman but all of my begging fell on deaf ears. Susan even wanted me to have sxxx with her but I refused to stain my white again with her. We ended up exchanging words with each other that day. I told Susan to her face that I must marry Lucy whether she liked it or not.
My brother and my uncles went together to talk to my parents. But my parents vowed never to release their blessings to us. Even when my uncles threatened to throw their support for me to marry Lucy, my parents insisted that they wouldnβt be part of it. My brother told me that the meeting ended in a querel that day.
Weeks later, my uncles sent for me to come home with my wife-to-be. We took some days off and traveled home to see my uncles. Together, we all traveled to Onitsha to see my parents again. It was a lengthy conversation we had but our talks were as if we were pouring water on a stone. However, me and Lucy had to go down on our knees pleading with my parents all to no avail. My parentsβ deaf ears on our pleas got his brothers angry. They went up in flames. At the end, they left angrily.
βWe have accorded you that respect as our brother. But since you have taken us for granted, then watch us throw our full weights to them. He must marry her whether you people like it or notβ, my father’s older brother angrily yelled before leaving that day.
We couldnβt even wait for my uncles to go before we left the house as well. We had to spend the night in a hotel before leaving for Lagos the following morning.
βMy son, we are right behind you. Whenever you are ready, inform us and we will go with you to marry her. You have fulfilled all the righteousnesses. So the almighty God and our ancestors will not hold it against youβ, my uncles told me in unison when my parents had gone inside their room abandoning us in the sitting room.
We finally had a date for the introduction. We only had about five people coming from the East. They were three of my uncles and two women. They were to fly to Lagos first before setting off to Ibadan for the introduction ceremony. My brother had booked their flight tickets.
Immediately the date was fixed, I called my parents informing them. I also pleaded with them to come join us but they refused my pleading.
One fateful Sunday evening, I was at home alone when I had a knock on my door. I went and opened the door, Lo and behold, it was Susan standing akimbo at the front of my door.
βWhat are you doing here?β, I asked.
βSteve, canβt you even allow me into your house?β, she asked.
βTo do what? Anyway, you are not welcome here.β I paused. βBy the way, who gave you the address of my house?β, I had to ask.
βIt doesnβt matter. What matters is I am here nowβ, she said.
βWhat brought you to my house?β, I asked again with a very long face.
βHow dare you going ahead to marry that w|tch even against your parentsβ wish?β, she asked.
βSusan, you are the w|tch here. Because Itβs only an ev|l person would vowed to ruin and destroy her fellow human beingβs life. But all your ev|l plans have failedβ, I said.
βDonβt rejoice yet because you have not wonβ, she angrily threatened.
βI will always be a winner because whatβs in me is more than whatβs in you. Ev|l womanβ, I replied.
βSteve, like I said before, I will use the last drop of my blood to make sure you never get married to Lucyβ, she threatened.
βThen watch and see me make her my wifeβ, I said and slammed the door at her.
Two days before my introduction, my people flew into Lagos. I went and picked them from the airport straight to their hotel.
All the necessary things had been put in place. Even the hotel that we all would lodge in Ibadan had been booked down.
On the eve of my introduction, we left Lagos for Ibadan in convoy.
Susan did not go with us. She used her babies as an excuse. She said that one of them was sick. Though I know it was all a lie.
Our journey was going smoothly. We had about five motors with us β three private cars and two buses β conveying family, friends and well-wishers.
But along the line, something terrible happened.
We were involved in an accident.
