I called the number more than hundred times all to no avail β still not reachable. I had to hold my phone with my two hands like my life depended on it.
I refused to go home at that moment. So I remained at the bar waiting and hoping for the number to call back. However, I kept trying the number every now and then.
Finally, the number called in the evening. It was a flash. So I had to call back. As God may have it, the network permitted us to talk. But the boy’s English was the big problem. Language seemed to be a big barrier. The boy seemed good in the Yoruba language only but I donβt understand yoruba. So I had to give the phone to someone who understood the language very well.
They had a brief talk. He interpreted the whole thing for me. Though the boy could not speak in detail. He just gave out an address for us to come. It was about Lucy.
But whether Lucy was alive or dead, I donβt know.
I drove to Ijebu Ode, Ogun State with my friend who hears and speaks yoruba fluently. When we got to the landmark the boy described for us, I called the number. Luckily, It went through. We spoke with the boy for clear directions to their house. After wandering around, we finally arrived at the place. It was a small compound made of a depleted house. A mud house. It was a village serenity.
Lucy was alive but in a very bad condition. In fact, she was half dead. She couldnβt talk. She had reduced drastically. Although she recognized me very well. I could see it through the smiling face she put on. I shed tears while watching Lucy. She has become the shadow of her former self.
We had a talk with the old man. He lived alone with a little boy. The one that has been speaking to us on the phone. A boy of about twelve years or so. The old man doesnβt speak English; he speaks Yoruba. He was above eighties but very agile. He explained how he and his boy picked Lucy from the river with her hands and legs tied with rope. That she was vomited to the river side by the water. They found her while fishing. With the help of people, he took her home. He has been treating her with herbal medicine all these while. He told us that Lucy has been unconscious for a month, that yesterday was the first time she opened her mouth to talk. That my name was what she has been calling. Though they couldnβt understand what she had been saying because she wasnβt talking clearly. The only thing they could understand was her asking for a phone. They gave her a phone but it took her almost eternity before she could type my phone number and signaled them to call.
I appreciated the old man with a token. I took Lucy to the hospital for intensive treatment. I didnβt tell anyone except Phyna and her mother. Even my own brother, I didnβt tell him. I donβt want Susan to know that Lucy was alive because she was the person I suspected to be behind the whole thing.
The hospital I took Lucy to was far away from Ikeja; a place where nobody knows her. You really need to see the way Lucyβs mother reacted on hearing the news. The poor woman jumped up from her sickbed and became well again. I took her to the hospital where she was staying with her daughter as she was receiving treatments.
Lucy was responding to treatment very well. In fact, there were a lot of changes. Though she has not been able to talk to any of us; she was just staring at everyone in great loss. Doctor said she suffered a severe shock coupled with mental and psychological trauma. But the good news was that she would be fine. The doctor assured us. That it was just a matter of time.
When Lucy finally recovered back, she narrated how she was kidnapped. It was a well organized crime syndicate operation. Everything happened within a few minutes. It all started when she boarded a min-bus that night. The bus had three passengers with her making it four. A young lady sat close to her. Lucy saw when the lady beckoned a guy hawking sachet and table water. She purchased a bottled-water with two hundred naira and asked for a balance of one hundred naira. When the hawker hesitated giving her the balance, the lady bought another bottled-water and offered it to Lucy on the pretext of not wanting to forfeit her balance. Naturally unaware that it had been tampered with, Lucy accepted the water and drank it. After about ten minutes or so, she became drowsy and eventually fell asleep.
Lucy woke up as a captive in an uncomplicated building in an unknown place. She was tortured and starved. Blindfolded all through. Her abductors were receiving instructions from a woman over the phone. After days in captivity, the gang leader got an instruction to kill Lucy and dump her body wherever no one would find her. After all said by the syndicate, her legs were tied together likewise her hands and eyes blindfolded. She was bundled like a heap of waste and thrown inside a very deep river alive to die and be fed by fishes and other aquatic animals.
But as God may have it, the water vomited her out and she was rescued. But the face behind the mask was still unknown.
When Lucy recovered fully well and went back to her fatherβs house, I told my brother the whole story. He was very happy. He even made out time and paid her a visit. He bought her beverages and also gave her a token.
One day, my brother called me and asked me why Lucy had not visited the house ever since she had a family dinner with us. I told him that she was afraid of his wife, Susan. In fact, I told her everything that has happened between Susan and Lucy without leaving any stone unturned. Even, I told her how Lucy lost her job because of Susan. My brother was very disappointed with his wife. He promised to do something about it. Though I pleaded with him not to fight his wife over it.
After about three days, my brother called to tell me that it was high time I got an apartment for myself so that I would start planning about my life with Lucy. He advised me to plan on how to settle down with her and start a family. My happiness that day knew no bounds. It was as if my brother read my mind. He told me to go all out house hunting and I should let him know whenever I get a place I like. I appreciated him a lot.
Meanwhile Lucy has resumed work. I told her about my discussion with my brother and she was very excited about me getting an apartment of my own. She also helped me submit my CVs for job applications while I was busy hunting for a house.
I finally got a two bedroom flat within ikeja axis and my brother paid for three years rent for me. He also furnished the house to standard.
The day I moved into the house was the day I gave Lucy the biggest surprise of her life. She never saw it coming. The surprise hit her like a thunderbolt that she nearly passed out that day.
