I woke up only to find myself in a hospital bed. When I looked around, I couldnβt believe who I saw sitting beside me. It was Jude, my brother.
βJude, are you really the one? Are you okay?β, I almost asked him two questions at the same time.
βI should be the one asking you if you are okayβ, he said, observing me.
βWhat are mine doing here?β, I asked him because I couldnβt remember how I got to the hospital.
βYou passed out. The doctor said that it was a shock.β He explained.
I remained silent. I opened my mouth to say a word but nothing seemed to be coming out.
βSteven, is there anything you are not telling me? Talk to me, I am your brother. Are you really okay?β, he pressed.
βNothing. Just that I have not been finding it easy with my new job. Somehow stressful.β I had to lie.
βThe Doctor said that you needed a restβ, he said.
βOkay. What about Susan?β, I asked.
βShe just left now to get you something to eatβ, he explained.
βSteve, I have told you to join me in business but you refused. Now look at what you have caused yourself all in the name of office work. If that job is stressful, you better resign nowβ, he added.
βNo, I will be fine. You know, every first time always comes with its difficulties. But I will soon adapt.β I had to lie again.
βHis Excellency requires my presence with immediate effect. I am leaving for the East any moment from now.β He said.
βYou just returned from China today and you are traveling again. Canβt you have a rest for one day?β, I asked.
βMan has no relationship with rest in life except in his grave.β He said.
βMy major concern is for you not to break down one dayβ, I said.
Amid the conversation, Susan walked in with a nylon. I looked at her face and saw the disappointment she wore. I pretended and remained calm.
βHoney, heβs complaining about the job. He said the job is stressful.β He paused. βIf the job is going to be a threat to his health, he better resign. Earlier the better. I canβt afford to lose him because heβs the only blood I have in this lifeβ.
βNobody is losing anybody.β Susan had to intercept. βNothing good comes easy especially at the start. He will definitely adaptβ. She said.
βExactly what I told him. I will be fineβ, I added.
βYou better adapt o because if this happens again, I will be the one to write the resignation letter myself on your behalf..β He said.
βAs if they leave you, you can write itβ, Susan joked and we burst into laughter.
βLook, you can insult my brother inside the bedroom, but donβt do that in my presenceβ, ‘I added to the joke.
βLook at whoβs talkingβ, Susan said while pointing at me βYou better stand up and letβs be going homeβ, she said, jokingly.
βEven if I canβt write, I will pay a lawyer to do that for meβ, he defended amid laughter.
The conversation continued until my brother stood up to take his leave.
βHoney, let me see you offβ, Susan said while standing up.
βPlease donβt worry. Relax and take care of my brother for meβ, he said to her.
βDo you have to tell me that? Havenβt I been taking care of him since?β, she said, smiling.
βHoney, I know you have been doing that but please do more. See you guys laterβ, he said and hurried out.
βWhen are you coming back?β, I asked.
βI donβt know. But I will communicate to you guysβ, he said while slamming the door.
Immediately, the smiling atmosphere disappeared in thin air. Everybody put up a face. You really need to see the way Susan was staring at me in a resent.
βSteve, what was that drama for?β, she angrily asked.
βI thought you did itβ, I said.
βDid what?β, she queried.
βPoisoned his foodβ, I replied.
βBut I gave you my word? Look, I am not a dev|lβ,she said with an angry and disappointed look.
βI thought you had done the worst. The signal you gave me complicated the whole thingβ, I said.
βI had to send you the signal with my eyes for you to comport yourself because the guilty handwriting was clear and bold on your faceβ. She angrily said.
βI am sorry. I got everything wrongβ, I apologized.
βSorry for yourself.β She hissed. βJust a little composure, you canβt put up.β
βSusu sorry na, ehnβ, I teased her.
βI will forgive you on one conditionβ, she said.
βWhat condition?β.
βThat you will hammer me very well tonight in the aza room(a euphemism for the bedroom.)β, she named her condition.
βAhh! Today? Susan, do you want to kill me? Canβt you see that I am on drip and the doctor said I need a restβ, I had to express my surprise.
βYou and I know very well that nothing is wrong with you. So spare me that pretense, abeg.β She teased.
βSusan, have a pity on me na, abegβ, I pleaded, jokingly.
βSince that is the only thing you are very good at, you have to live up to the expectationsβ, she said, teasing.
βI donβt understand. What exactly do you mean by that?β.
βYou heard me right. Secondly, we are going home today. I canβt afford to sleep in this hospital. Another thing is this: I am very honeyβ, she whispered into my ear.
Later, I was discharged from the hospital and we went home that night.
Despite my reluctance, Susan managed to lure me into sxx that night. We had it hot and rough that night.
Few days later, I resumed work after some days off. Throughout the days that I didnβt come to work, Lucy always called to check up on me. But she doesnβt give me the room to talk; she would call and after asking me how I was doing, she would end the call. If I tried calling her back, she wouldnβt answer. Even at work, she doesnβt give me a listening ear not to talk of an opportunity for us to talk.
At first, Lucy thought Susan was my wife, but after proving her wrong, she insisted that there was something intimate going on between us. And to worsen the whole thing, Susan has accosted her, warning her to stay away from me. Lucy cried on the phone while explaining to me the level of embarrassment that Susan gave to her that day at place of work.
One fateful day, after work, I accosted Lucy in her car that we needed to talk. Lucy insisted that she didn’t have the time, that she wanted to go home, but I persisted. After all said and done, Lucy moved into her car to go but I refused to let her go. In fact, I blocked her car from moving, signaling her to give me a listening ear or crush me to death. She horned severally all to no avail. At one point, she had to come down from the car to give me a listening ear.
βSteve, whatβs the problem with you?β, she asked.
βLucy, why are you treating me so badly like this? Why are you punishing me based on what you think without giving me a fair hearing?. Thatβs unfair..β
βWhatβs unfair Steve?β.
βLucy, you are punishing me unjustly. I have told you that Susan is my brotherβs wife and nothing else. You are getting it wrong here, nothing is going on between us.β I had to lie.
βSteve, my spirit is telling me otherwise. In fact, my spirit is not at peace with you yet. All I need is space from you. Whenever my spirit is at peace with you, then we continue.β She said while trying to enter her car.
βLucy please wait.β I had to stop her
βSteve, please allow me to go. I donβt want Susan to meet us here. I donβt want any embarrassment again..β
Talk of the devil, she would appear. Lo and behold, look at Susan coming. She has already sighted us from afar. You need to see how she frowned her face. With the anger boldly written on her face, I needed no seer to tell me that she was up for trouble.
