We were now standing at their door. One of the officers rang the bell, and after waiting for two to three minutes, the door opened.
βGood morning, Sir,β Sandrineβs mum greeted.
βGood morning. Is this the house of Sandrine?β the officer asked.
βYes, it is. I hope thereβs no problem, officer,β she replied, visibly frightened.
βPlease, can we see your daughter, Ma?β the police officer insisted.
βActually, she went to get some groceries. I will call her on the phone. Please come in and wait for her,β she ushered us in and then went back upstairs.
After a while, I heard her talking to her daughter on the phone, commanding her to come home quickly.
βSandrine, you have guests,β she stated.
βItβs the girl who was here the other day,β she waited for her to answer.
βYeah, Iβm sure thatβs her name,β she listened again.
βHow should I know what she wants? Sheβs here with the police; come and sort things out. Their presence here scares me.β
A few minutes later, she came down and informed us that her daughter would be here in a minute.
I looked around and couldnβt find anyone except for the grandma and the little baby girl. The grandma went ahead and carried her baby from where she was into her arms. She looked so beautiful, having eyes just like my Nuella. She was the spitting image of her father. Her big eyes caught mine, and she smiled at me. But instead of smiling back, tears rolled down my cheek, and I had to quickly excuse myself.
βWhat are you doing, Mina? Why are you trying to take away a mother from her child?β I asked myself. I was outside her house, now pacing up and down, struggling to compose myself.
βBut I need to find out what happened to my kids. She needs to go to jail,β I murmured to myself.
βHey! Are you okay?β a voice spoke unexpectedly. I turned to see it was Sandrineβs mum.
βI am okay, maβam!β I said as I stood in one spot, watching her walk towards me.
βI know youβre confused, hurt, feel betrayed, and even worse, but I waββ before she could finish, I cut in.
βIβm sorry, maβam, but I need to go in now,β I said and left her there speechless.
As I was just coming in, Sandrine drove into her compound and rushed to where her mum was. Both of them made their way into the house and greeted the uniformed men.
βGood day, sir. How can I help you?β
βGood day, maβam. I am Officer Spike Mvondo. You need to come with us to the police station for questioning concerning the deaths of Emmanuel and Emmanuella.β
βBut I had no hand inβ¦β
βI think you should do yourself a favor by keeping silent.β
βBut why are you arresting me?β
βWe are not arresting you, maβam. Weβre simply doing our job, which is to take you in for questioning.β
βButβ¦β she persisted.
βNo buts, maβam! Please come with us. Donβt make things harder than they already are.β
She turned to me. βYou think I killed your children? Who the hell are you to come to my house and arrest me? You started this war, and I will end it. Watch me,β she blurted out.
βMaβam, please, this is not the time to start posing threats to people. Letβs go.β
As much as I knew this was too much, I still needed to get justice for my children before they are buried. I was not a good mum, and so this might be the only chance I have to make amends for what happened.
