It took us just about 30 minutes to locate Mama Ellen. Stephan and I came out of the car and walked to where she was standing. The bridge had now been surrounded by onlookers, some hissing and others comforting Mama Ellen. The moment she saw us, she burst out crying again.
βWhat happened, Mama? How did this happen?β I asked, struggling to comfort her.
In as much as I am supposed to care less about what happens to my husband, I still would never wish death on him. He is still the father of my children and the one on the way. Besides, his mum has been my pillar since my calamities started. She doesnβt deserve whatβs happening to her, neither does my husband.
While I was comforting Mama Ellen, there were two women behind us gossiping. They were actually in a squabble with each other as to whether my husband committed suicide or not.
βCβmon, this man didnβt commit suicide,β the first lady stated with so much confidence.
βHow exactly are you sure, Mirabel? A man that was said to have jumped into the river?β the second questioned.
βAccording to what I heard, it was said that he was being chased by a group of men. When he reached the bridge, he didnβt even think twice; he jumped,β the first answered.
βHmm!! Thatβs not what I heard. What I was told was that he committed suicide because he was responsible for the death of his two children.β
βJesus!!! How could he do such a thing? Thatβs not even true. Because the man I heard from was a witness to this. He saw the people following this man and he couldnβt say anything because he was scared of being killed in the process.β
βAre you sure about what youβre saying?β
βYes, Cora! Very certain.β
βBut if at all he witnessed this, why didnβt he go to the police officers and report it?β
βI donβt know, but I think heβs trying to exempt himself from being killed.β
βShhh!! A policemanβs coming our way. I donβt want to be counted amongst,β she cautioned, as they hurriedly left the place.
We were still standing by the big bridge, hoping my husbandβs body would be found for us to identify it, but just like that, our day ended. We were asked to go home and that we would be informed if they finally saw his body.
Days became weeks and weeks turned to months, still no body. The boatmen had been patrolling the river for a very long time but they finally gave up.
After all that, I decided I was going to bury my children. I wanted their souls to go home in peace. I told my mother-in-law, who happened to be happy with the decision. We had a wake at home, where the bodies of my two babies would be displayed for friends and well-wishers to say their final goodbyes.
In as much as I had accepted their loss and prepared to welcome the new one, I thought it would be easier, but it still ached my heart. Most especially because I hadnβt gotten vengeance for their death.
The wake program was to start at 7:00 pm. I had my friend Stephan organize the occasion for me. We only made a little food that evening and we were hoping people would just come and then leave. But the entire neighborhood came out. Some of my neighbors even offered to get food from their houses and cook. To them, Nuella and Emma were their children too. There were times Nuella and Emma would visit my neighbors, playing with their children. Their kids did the same thing.
In my region, when someone dies, keeping a wake for them is very important. It usually takes place from evening, sometimes like 8 pm, till morning.
Everyone dances in circles, beating drums, and others hold the picture of the deceased, dancing. We also shared the little we had. Some go as far as burning large heaps of wood while they dance surrounding it. I donβt know why they do that, but it felt like the right thing to do.
The night was going on well, people dancing and playing drums outside. I was inside the house with my mother-in-law, when suddenly, music stopped, and the voices stopped. I walked out only to see Sandrine, holding the microphone.
βGood evening, everyone. I am not going to waste or take so much of your time, but I have a message I wish to share. I just want to let the inhabitants of this house know that they have just about 3 days of grace to start looking for somewhere to stay. I will be renting out this apartment in a month’s time,β she said, dropped the microphone, and walked away, leaving people in shock.
