As Emma sat at a small table in the corner of the bustling coffee shop, she sipped her latte, glancing at her watch with growing impatience. The minutes ticked by, each one adding to her irritation. She had been there for nearly half an hour, and Laila was nowhere to be seen. Emma sighed, tapping her fingers on the table, the sound almost drowned out by the hum of conversation around her.
Just as she was about to send a frustrated text, the door swung open, and in walked Laila, her face lit up with a bright smile as if she hadn’t just kept Emma waiting for ages.
“Hey, Emma!” Laila called out, making her way over to the table.
Emma fixed her friend with a pointed stare. “You’re 20 minutes late, Laila. That’s a long time.”
Laila’s smile faltered, and she quickly sat down, her hands fidgeting in her lap. “I’m so sorry, Emma. I lost track of time.”
Emma narrowed her eyes but decided to let it slide. “Why did you want to see me, anyway?”
Laila hesitated, her nervousness apparent as she reached into her bag. She pulled out a small envelope, the edges slightly crumpled, and handed it to Emma with trembling hands.
Emma took the envelope, staring at it with confusion. “What’s this for?”
“It’sβ¦it’s a love letter,” Laila admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Emma’s brow furrowed. “A love letter? Then why are you giving it to me?”
Laila bit her lip, her gaze dropping to the table. “Iβ¦I want you to give it to Leo.”
Emma’s eyes widened, and she nearly dropped the letter in shock. “Are you fucking kidding me, Laila? I’m not doing that. I literally told you to stay away from the Miller boys!”
Laila’s expression crumbled, her desperation clear. “Please, Emma. Just this once. All my life, I’ve been in love with Leo, ever since I was 16, but heβs never even looked my way. I’m desperate, Emma. If you help me give this to him, I promise I wonβt ask you to do it again.”
Emma’s anger began to fade as she saw the misery on Lailaβs face. She sighed, leaning back in her chair. “If you know that Leo doesn’t care, then why bother?”
Tears welled up in Lailaβs eyes as she clutched her hands together. “I donβt know, Emma. I justβ¦ I just love him. He’s the main reason I came to this university. I can’t help how I feel.”
Emma’s heart softened as she watched her friend struggle with her emotions. It was clear that Laila had been carrying this burden for a long time. Emma took a deep breath, feeling her resolve weaken. “Fine, I’ll do it. But if he doesn’t take it, donβt get mad at me, and I wonβt do this again.”
Laila’s face lit up, and before Emma could react, Laila had jumped out of her seat and wrapped her arms around her in a tight hug. “Thank you, bestie! What would I do without you?”
Emma couldnβt help but smile, returning the hug. “Nothing,” she said, her voice softening as she held her friend close.

Emma spent the rest of her day in the library, trying to focus on her studies, but her mind kept drifting back to the letter she had promised to deliver. As the hours passed, the sun began to set, and she knew it was time to head back to her dorm or more accurately, the mansion where she lived with the Miller boys. The thought of facing them filled her with a sense of dread, but she pushed it aside and made her way back.
When she arrived, the familiar sounds of laughter and video games greeted her. Chris and Alex were engrossed in their game, the flashing lights from the TV reflecting off their faces, while Nathan sat nearby, scrolling through his phone. Emma hesitated for a moment at the door, steeling herself for what was to come.
Ignoring Chris and Alex, she walked straight to Nathan. “Nathan,” she called, trying to keep her voice steady.
Nathan looked up from his phone and smiled warmly at her. “Hey, Emma. What’s up?”
She shifted uncomfortably, glancing around the room before speaking. “Um, where’s Leo?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Chris turned to her, his expression darkening. “Why the fuck are you looking for that bastard?” he snapped, causing Emma to freeze.
Emma turned to face Chris, her mind racing with irritation. She couldnβt understand why he hated Leo so much. From the very first day she had arrived, Chris had shown nothing but hostility whenever Leo’s name was mentioned. It was baffling, and she was already sick of it. But rather than confronting him, she chose to ignore his outburst.
“Is he in his room?” she asked Nathan, her voice firmer now.
Nathan nodded, though he looked concerned. “Yeah, but why do you want to see him?”
Emma hesitated, her hand tightening around the letter in her pocket. “I have something important to tell him,” she said, trying to avoid the prying eyes of the others.
Chris was fuming now, his fists clenching. “Why? Is it so important that you canβt say it in front of us?”
“Yes,” she snapped back, meeting his glare with one of her own.
“Chris, that’s enough,” Nathan interjected, sensing the tension rising, but Chris ignored him. Instead, he grabbed Emma by the wrist, yanking her towards another room.
“What the fuck, Chris?” Emma shouted, wincing as she looked down at her bruised wrist.
“Stay away from Leo!” Chris roared, his eyes blazing with fury.
“You donβt get to tell me what to do!” Emma shot back, her own anger bubbling to the surface. She had tolerated Chris’s behavior for too long, and she was done with it.
“Yes, I can. You’re my fucking girlfriend!” Chris yelled, his voice echoing off the walls.
Emma’s breath caught in her throat. “I’m not,” she spat back, her voice trembling with both fear and defiance.
Chris glared at her, the room crackling with tension. Without another word, he pulled out his phone and dialed a number. The call was answered almost immediately.
“I want to report an issue,” Chris said coldly, his eyes never leaving Emma’s. “Iβve been violated by Emma Harper. I want her out of Westwood University immediately.”
Emma’s heart sank as she realized the weight of his words. Within seconds, her phone buzzed with a notification she had been expelled.
Chris ended the call and lowered the phone, his face a mask of fury. “Iβll only get you back in if you agree to be my girlfriend. Never deny it, and do as I say. Donβt you dare disobey me,” he growled.
Emma stared at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of hatred and helplessness. Every fiber of her being screamed at her to fight back, but she knew there was nothing she could do. She was trapped.
“I agree,” she whispered, the words burning her throat. Inside, she was boiling with rage, but on the outside, she was forced to comply.
Chris sent a quick message, and Emma’s phone buzzed again she had been reinstated. He walked towards her, a twisted smile on his face as he pulled her close.
“You canβt disobey, love. Stay the fuck away from Leo,” Chris warned, his tone dangerously soft.
All Emma could do was nod, her mind numb with anger and frustration.
Chrisβs demeanor changed instantly, his smile widening. “My darling, get ready. Weβre going to a party tonight, and Iβm taking you along.”
Emma wanted to refuse, but she knew the consequences if she did. Chris would make good on his threats. She nodded mechanically, her mind racing with thoughts of escape.
As she walked away, she spotted Leo coming down the stairs, but he didn’t spare her a glance. She wanted to call out for him but before she could, Chris was by her side, wrapping his arm possessively around her waist.
“Remember to always obey me, love,” he whispered in her ear, the word “love” making her stomach turn.
Emma forced a smile, but inside, she was seething with a rage that threatened to consume her. She wished more than anything that she had never crossed paths with Chris.

As Emma walked into the mansion, the smell of alcohol hung heavy in the air, mixing with the pulsating beat of the music. Chris’s arm was wrapped possessively around her waist, a constant reminder of the control he wielded over her. Emma despised what she was wearing. She had wanted to dress comfortably in cargo pants and a hoodie, but Chris had immediately shot down the idea. Instead, he had ordered an outfit that cost a fortune.
She was now dressed in a form-fitting, dark emerald green dress by Versace. The dress clung to her body, with a daringly low neckline that made her feel exposed, and the fabric shimmered under the dim lights. The hemline stopped mid-thigh, leaving her legs bare and accentuated by a pair of white Gucci sneakers with gold accents. Around her neck, Chris had placed a delicate Tiffany & Co. necklace, the small diamond pendant resting just above her collarbone. The outfit was completed with a designer leather jacket that she had draped over her shoulders, a token attempt to retain some sense of comfort.
As they entered the party, all eyes turned toward them. Emma could feel the weight of their stares, and her skin prickled with discomfort.
βIs she the peasant?β someone whispered.
βShe looks different,β another voice commented.
βSheβs pretty,β a third person chimed in.
βSheβs still a peasant,β the first voice added dismissively.
Chrisβs voice boomed across the room, silencing the whispers. βLet me make everything clear to you guys,β he said, pulling Emma closer to him. βIf anyone dares call my girlfriend all sorts of names or tries to bully her, I swear I will make you regret it.β
With that, he tilted Emmaβs chin up and kissed her, hard and possessive. She wanted to pull away, but Chrisβs grip tightened.
βKiss me back,β he ordered quietly, and with no other choice, Emma did as he demanded.
The party resumed around them, but Emmaβs mind was elsewhere. She scanned the room, searching for Laila, but she was nowhere to be found. The stares continued to burn into her, and the pressure became too much. Feeling suffocated, she made her way outside, desperate for some fresh air.
She inhaled deeply, the cool night air filling her lungs. It was a brief reprieve from the overwhelming tension inside.
βHey,β a voice said softly from behind her. Emma turned to see Nathan standing beside her, a small, comforting smile on his face.
She returned the smile, though it didnβt reach her eyes. βI know you hate Chris now,β Nathan said with a chuckle.
βI really hate him,β Emma admitted, not bothering to hide her disdain.
βJust give him time,β Nathan said, though his tone suggested he didnβt entirely believe his own words. βHeβs just spoiled. Heβs our parents’ favorite, thatβs why.β
Emma didnβt respond. Instead, she looked up at the sky, closing her eyes as memories of her parents washed over her. She missed them so much that she didnβt notice the tear slipping down her cheek until Nathanβs gentle voice broke through her thoughts.
βAre you okay?β he whispered, concern lacing his words.
Emma opened her eyes, startled to find herself crying. She let out a bitter laugh. βIβm fine,β she lied, trying to brush it off.
Nathan stepped closer, his hand reaching out to wipe away her tears. They were so close now that she could feel his breath on her skin. They stood there, staring at each other, the world around them fading away.
Nathan couldnβt take his eyes off her. She had always been beautiful, ever since she first stepped into the mansion, but nowβ¦ now, something had changed. For the first time, he felt his heart skip a beat at the sight of her. He guessed this was what they called love at first sight, though he couldnβt deny the flicker of jealousy he felt towards Chris. But he would never let anything come between him and his brother.
As he wiped away her tears, their faces were inches apart, and before Nathan could think it through, he leaned in and kissed Emma softly.
Emma wasnβt shocked by what had happened. In fact, she found herself kissing him back. His lips were soft, and for a moment, she lost herself in the kiss, not knowing why but simply feeling.
Then, the moment shattered as a thunderous voice boomed from behind her, making her blood run cold.
βWHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOUβRE DOING?!β Chris yelled, his eyes burning with wildfire.
