The nurse left to give them some privacy and after listening to his ramblings, he slept in her arms and woke up two hours later.
“Its best you come lay on the bed, you slept for two hours, you need to get more….”
“Is it you am looking at, Steph” Martin said suddenly.
“Do you recognize me now?” Stephanie ask and he nodded, spreading out his arms and Stephanie went into it, both giving each other the embrace they’ve lost for five years.
“Why did you leave like that?” Martin ask as they both cuddle on the sofa.
“You told me to leave”
“I did tell you to but you should have known that I didn’t mean it. You should have known that I only said what I said out of anger. When you left, I blame myself, I hated myself for saying those cruel things to you when I should have comforted you. I tried looking for you but I couldn’t find you. Then I got this disease and I could barely remember the little things I did”
“So, I came here doing my best to always remember you but it keeps getting worse. I always forget” Martin said crying.
“It’s okay dad. I’m here now and I won’t ever leave your side”
“Promise?” A teary Martin ask and she nodded.
“What about the baby? Hope you didn’t abort it?” Martin ask, feeling guilty.
“No, I had triplets. Two girls and one boy, I will bring them to see you someday” Stephanie promise.
“About Brenda and Bianca. Your nurse told me what they did and I want you to know that I am going to do everything to get back what they….”
“I don’t want you to”
“But it’s your money and they cruelly took it from you”
“I don’t want the money. If there’s something I want then it’s the house. That house means a lot to me than any money. It was where my father was born, where I was born and where you were born, it hold a lot of good memories which is why i was sad when I heard that they sold it” Martin said, looking sad and dejected.
Stephanie took hold of his hand to give it a light kiss.
“I’m making you a promise today and I hope you remember it. I will get back the house for you and all of us will live there again, together as a family” Stephanie said and Martin hug her.
“I’m truly sorry for everything. Forgive me for being a terrible father” Martin said, tears sliding down his cheek.
Stephanie got back home in the evening and was in the study when she heard the door ring.
Knowing who it is, she went to answer it herself.
“What’s he doing here?” Susan ask as soon as she saw Ashton.
“Hello everyone” Ashton greeted, his eyes solely on the kids playing in the sitting room.
“Are you here to take Mommy away again?” Faye ask him.
“No, he’s here to talk to me. Go back to what you are doing and aunt, I will explain everything to you later” Stephanie said.
“Do you need me to come with you?” David ask, giving Ashton a wary look.
“Thanks David but I can handle this, come with me” she said to Ashton who was also starring at David with displeasure.
“Are you and that guy a thing?” Ashton ask as soon as they were in the study.
“Not that it’s any of your business but David and I are just colleagues. Now, let’s get it straight, what do you want in exchange for the house you acquired recently?” Stephanie ask.
“So, you’ve spoken to your father?”
“I have and I found out a lot of things but the most important one is that you bought our family home and I want to know what I can do to get back it back” Stephanie said.
“Are you still asking when I made my intention clear last night”
“Your intention? From what I can remember you only….” The rest of her words trail off when she recalled something he said last night.
“You don’t mean that ” Stephanie said.
“I did. I meant what I said Steph. The only way you can get back your family home is by marrying me” He lay out his condition.
“B…but you can’t possibly want to marry me and I thought you only want joint custody of the kids” Stephanie said quickly.
“That was what I wanted at first but then I realized that it won’t work which is why I want us to get married and give our children a real home”
“A real home without love? you do know that I feel nothing for you, right?” Stephanie ask.
“I do but I’m willing to take a chance”
“If you think you can use the house to get what you want then you are mistaking. I’m not going to marry you”
“So you will let go of the house you love, a house your father wants back, you are going to let it all go?” Ashton ask.
“You know my answer. Now, please leave” Stephanie said.
Angry and frustrated that things didn’t go the way he want, he left the house, ignoring everyone.
He had thought that by using this means, he will get Stephanie and his kids but she ruin everything by refusing to marry him.
He doesnt want to fight her for custody and also he doesn’t want joint custody, he want them all to live together as a family and that’s because…he knew a part of him will be incomplete without Stephanie.
Ashton stood outside, trying to control his anger when suddenly he felt someone arms around him, hugging him from behind.
“You win, I will do as you say. I will marry you and in exchange you give me the house” Stephanie said softly.
At that moment, some reporters arrive, taking pictures of them.
Ashton face her, pulling her into his arms for another hug.
A smile brighten his face, showing how happy he felt until he heard her say.
“I might have given in to your demand but you should know that this blackmail of yours only makes me hate you more, I hate you, Ashton Maverick”
The smile on Ashton face vanish………
