I feel so bad for pretending not to remember who Dove is but at the same time I feel like it’s for the best. She doesn’t need me in her life, all I’ve done his to ruin her. She’s still so young, finding out I’ve been asleep for a year meaning she’s now 17, she has a bright future ahead the last thing I’d want to do is keep her hostage.
The doctor just finished running some test for me. He gave me a studying look and even checked my pulse twice.
“Weird” He grunt. “You’re fine, no damage but how can’t you remember her?” He asks.
I know I can’t keep this to myself anymore and I let out a sigh. “I lied” I said.
“Why did you lie?” He asks.
“Because I don’t want her to know. I just want her to live her life without me getting involved. She has a bright future ahead and I love her that’s why I’ve decided to let her go” I licked my chapped lips. My heart burns as I explain myself to the doctor, God knows how much I want to pull her in my arms and kiss her the moment I opened my eyes but on a second note, I realized how much I’m holding her back. “If it’s meant to be then she’d come back to me, I know” I completed.
The doctor sighs. “I won’t question what you plan to do but that girl was really worried about you. A decision was made to turn off your life support machine but she stayed with you all night just to beg you to wake up. I hope you talk to her instead”
“I’ve thought about that but Dove loves me too much, I bet she won’t agree to it. I want to face this alone, I want her to forget about me and be the better person she ought to be” I muttered.
The doctor only rubbed my shoulder before leaving. I spent some time in the hospital and I couldn’t look at Dove, I couldn’t even look at her when we were coming back from the hospital. After hundreds of tests and re- test, the doctor concluded I could get discharged.
Home felt like home. I breath in some fresh air as I studied the whole place. My eyes went to the refrigerator and I immediately got dejavu of when Dove and I would fool around there. I shook the thoughts of and went to my room.
It felt the same expect empty, I remember I slept on this bed with Dove until I packed up and left alone. I need to stop thinking about Dove, it’s my choice to forget her and I want to strong to do just that. I went to the bathroom to shower before Taylor calls me out for dinner.
A lot of food were on my plate and mom kept adding more.
“Come on mom, I just survived a surgery and you want to kill me with food” I said with a low chuckle.
“We are just looking out for you, we failed to do that at first and we won’t fail anymore” Mom said and Aunt Maggie nodded in agreement.
I stylishly looked at Dove, she didn’t say anything she kept eating slowly.
“Brother, are you sure you don’t remember Dove?” Taylor asks causing me and Dove’s eyes to meet.

I fake a confuse look. “Is she my sister?” I ask.
“She’s aunt Maggie’s daughter. You two were close.” Taylor stares at Dove. “Really close” she adds but I play dumb.
“She must be a really good friend then. I promise I’d do all it takes to remember you” I flash her a friendly smile.
Dove suddenly stands up and leaves the table, climbing the stares at her room.
“She just needs time to adjust with the new changes” Mom says and I slowly nod my head.
“Anyways Maggie and I have something to say”. Mom lets out a shaky breath.
“You’re getting married already?” Taylor asks.
“What? No, we have broken up” Mom says leaving us in shock.
“For real?” I ask and Aunt Maggie nods.
“I hope it’s not because of me?” I ask again but worried this time.
“No trust me. We both think it’s the right thing to do. It’s a mutual agreement” Aunt Maggie says.
“Does that mean after you leave, you won’t come with Dove anymore? That’s the end of our friendship is it?” Taylor is already close to tears.
“No sweetie. Your mother and I are very much still friends and we would always come back to visit but we have to set our priorities straight this time. Family is important and you guys comes first” Aunt Maggie gives an explanation with a sweet look.
Call me selfish but part of me is happy thinking I still have hope to push things with Dove but I stick to my plan by letting her go and I won’t spoil it.
“If that’s your decision then we can’t oppose” I agree with them.

Okay Derek, just go get your water and go back. It’s simple as simple as abc. I tutor myself as I found my way to the fridge.
“Derek” She stops me but I didn’t want. I don’t want to turn back and look at her face. I’m afraid I won’t be able to pretend anymore if I do.
“I know you’re lying” she says next that made me stop.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re lying. I over heard your conversation with the doctor earlier” She says, her voice cracking and I slowly turned back.
Those pretence are gone. God I really miss her.
“Dove…”
“It’s okay Derek, I won’t make it hard for you. I will leave but promise me that you’d wait and you’re not just waiting, you’d fix yourself, go to school and quit smoking” She has tears in her eyes as she talks to me.
I move forward and she moves back.
“Just promise Derek, promise me” She pleads with me.
“I promise” I mutter.
She flashes me a smile and turns to leave but I ran after her hair and hug her from behind. “I really miss you Dove, it was so hard to pretend and I just don’t want to hurt you anymore” I cried for the first time in so many years.
She turns to face me.
“I get it, I want you Derek but I want you in the right way. I’m seek of hiding like we are doing something wrong that’s why I’m hoping we do this the right way. I will wait for you but will you wait for me? Would you find somebody else along the way? Say you won’t please” She cried and I cupped her face.
“It’s only you Dove, if I don’t spend my life with you then I would die alone”
She throws herself in my arms and I pulled her closer, hugging her title. “I would never be with another woman who is not you” I repeat myself.
We stayed like that for a while. I really want to kiss her but I can’t, we have to save that for later when she finally comes back to me and I come back to her but this time I would no longer be the bad influence in her life, I would be the good influence, we both will.
